Bernie Ecclestone wanted a race in the USSR, but a Hungarian friend of his recommended Budapest. They wanted a street circuit similar to the Circuit de Monaco to be built in the Népliget[2] - Budapest's largest park - but the government decided to build a new circuit .

Just outside Budapest, construction of the circuit commenced October 1, 1985 and was completed in a staggering eight months. The first race was held on March 24, 1986 in memory of János Drapál, the first Hungarian motorcycle Grand Prix champion. The Mogyoród has become one of the most visited locations in Hungary, following the Danube Bend-area and Lake Balaton, but before Budapest.

Due to its tight and twisty corners drivers and spectators comment that the Hungaroring design is similar to that of Circuit de Monaco. During 1989 the circuit was modified, when the chicane after the actual turn 3 was removed. In 2003, the main straight was lengthened by roughly 200 m (660 ft), and the hairpin at the end of the straight was also tightened in an attempt to facilitate more overtaking opportunities, as well as a tightening of what was Turn 13. The circuit is almost flat, the only notable change in elevation being a valley in the straight after Turn 3.
