Formula Renault 2.0

Heavy rain delayed the start of qualifying for Group 2, the first out this Sunday morning. Finally, the green light was given on a very wet track and all the drivers put on wet weather tyres.

Daniil Kvyat was not overawed by what was at stake and went to the top of the time sheets straight away. As the track conditions improved lap after lap the Russian gradually upped the pace and booked his place on the front row with a time of 2m 05.841secs. Behind him, Jordan King bagged second spot in front of Jake Dennis and Felipe Fraga.

Conditions weren’t much better for Group 1. The R-ace GP drivers Pierre Gasly and Andrea Pizzitola set the pace early on. Esteban Ocon managed to split them while Stoffel Vandoorne was back in fourth place.

The end of the session was pretty hectic and Josh Hill went to the front in 2m 07.290secs only to be beaten by Oliver Rowland in 2m 07.031secs who topped the time sheets in Group 1. He did not beat Kvyat’s time and the Russian and the Englishman will share the front row.

It was a disastrous session for Stoffel Vandoorne who could do no better than eighth in his group. He will start from the eighth row for the last race of the season, which will decide the 2012 title.
