Luchi Battles in Barcelona

The Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain is host to the second round of this years GP3 Championship. With long straights and a variety of corners, the Circuit de Catalunya is seen as an all-rounder circuit and is well known by the teams and drivers.

After a disappointing last race, Luciano Bacheta was looking to drawn on the style shown by his team, RSC Mücke Motorsport who displayed an early dominance in Istanbul.

However it was a difficult start to the weekend for the young Brit, who suffered from reliability issues in practice and qualifying, severely curtailing the number of laps he was able to complete. With significantly less running than expected, he was faced with starting Race 1 in last place. Facing this challenge with his usual resilience, Luciano had confidence in the abilities of his team:

“It was quite unlucky as the team is working hard to give me a good car, I believe in them.”

Despite his lack of running which stemmed back from no pre-season testing, Luciano showed an improved race pace as he successfully progressed through the pack to finish 22nd; his starting position for Race 2.

Race 2 commenced with chaos as a number of drivers stalled on the grid. Although the the majority of drivers were able to use their quick reflexes and took evasive action to avoid the obstacles, the inevitable collision came, resulting in the safety car being deployed. Luciano took advantage of the situation and tirelessly battled his way to 16th place, despite being investigated by the stewards for overtaking under the safety car; a matter which was not pursued. He went on to show his persistence and skill in defending against António Félix da Costa in the closing stages.

Luciano will be able to make up on some much needed running as the GP3 Series will be back on track 01-02 June at Hungaroring for the first of two mid-season tests.
