Formula Renault 2.0

Ferrari Driver Academy driver Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam) scored his first pole in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in Sunday morning qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps, with team-mate Luca Ghiotto accompanying him on the front row and Pierre Gasly (Tech 1 Racing) and Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam) making up the second row.

The drivers in Group B were greeted with bright sunshine and cool temperatures when they got qualifying under way. No sooner had the session started than Hans Villemi (Atech Reid) went off, bringing the yellow flags out. Oliver Rowland (Manor MP Motorsport) then took control before Luca Ghiotto went quickest of all with a last lap of 2:18.077, with the British driver eventually finishing third fastest behind Bruno Bonifacio.

“I tried to look after my tyres during the yellow flag and that made the difference,” explained Luca Ghiotto. “We haven’t had dry conditions like this and my times got better and better. I didn’t get a tow at all on my best lap and I think we’ve got the pace to win.”

The times in Group A were even faster, with Steijn Schothorst (Josef Kaufmann Racing) out front after the first flying laps. Pierre Gasly then nudged the Dutchman off the top of the times before Antonio Fuoco took pole with a lap of 2:17.482.

“It’s a very technical track and the team did a great job with the set-up and managing the traffic,” said Antonio Fuoco. “It looks like being a good day and I need to make a fast start.”

Today’s race starts at 13:15.
