Kevin Korjus already a winner at Brno
With three wins and a second place from four races, Kevin Korjus (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) couldn’t have hoped for a better start. The Estonian will come to Brno with bags of confidence, having already won here this season in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC championship. Of course, closest rivals Luciano Bacheta (Interwetten.com), Daniel de Jong (MP Motorsport), Jukka Honkavuori (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) and Arthur Pic (Tech 1 Racing), will be out to put a stop to the trend.
At the first meeting of the season, at Motorland Aragón, Kevin Korjus turned heads by driving to the win in each of the first two races of the season. With considerable panache and with a little bit of luck for good measure, the Estonian found himself assuming the role of leader of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Inevitably that made him the man to beat at Spa-Francorchamps. Imperturbable, the 17 year old driver underscored his position in Belgium, pocketing a second place in the first race and then going on to claim another win on the Sunday, with a perfectly managed race.
Consistently quick and seemingly impervious to any pressure, Kevin Korjus is currently in a very good place, and is pulling his Koiranen Bros Motorsport team mates along with him to boot. The positive spiral is clearly helping the likes of Jukka Honkavuori and Bart Hylkema, who have each shared the podium with Korjus. At Brno, a circuit where he has already won twice this season with the New Formula Renault 2.0, in Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 leader is in a great position to capitalise on his twenty five point lead.
Consistently in the top five, Luciano Bacheta is exploiting all his experience in the discipline and is currently lying second in the overall standings. But the British driver will need to turn up the volume if he is to threaten Kevin Korjus. Having said that, Bacheta has built up a sixteen point gap over third placed Daniel De Jong (MP Motorsport), and he can concentrate now on getting back in touch with the leader.
Arthur Pic and André Negrao (Cram Compétition) have been effective in qualifying, Pic having clocked up three pole positions and Negrao one, but both need to gain in consistency. Arthur Pic has only had one trouble-free race up to now, and that he transformed into a win. The status so far is not so different for André Negrao, with three retirements, making an inauspicious start to the campaign, followed by a third place at Spa-Francorchamps after leading for much of that race. The Frenchman and the Brazilian are now condemned to find the road back to winning ways at every event in order to hold onto their championships hopes. This is all the more necessary because behind Korjus and Bacheta the situation is extremely tight, with fourteen drivers grouped to within ten points.
On home soil, Krenek Motorsport’s two Czech drivers, Adam Kout and Jakub Knoll, have to be in with a shout too. Neither driver was present at Motorland Aragón, but both immediately showed their mettle at Spa. Despite poor results in qualifying, Jakub Knoll kept up with the pace of the leaders when it came to the races. Adam Kout made it clear we would be seeing plenty of him this season, finishing sixth on Saturday and fifth on Sunday. Having already found his way onto the podium in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 last season, the driver from Prague is dreaming of celebrating his first win in front of a home crowd.
