Kevin Korjus takes win number 2

After his win yesterday in the first race, Kevin Korjus (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) drove to victory again in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Motorland Aragón circuit. Following an eventful race, the Estonian crossed the finish line ahead of Hugo Valente (Tech 1 Racing) and Bart Hylkema (Koiranen Bros Motorsport). Korjus leaves Spain as the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship leader.

Quickest in qualifying on Saturday morning, Arthur Pic (Tech 1 Racing) was pole-sitter, followed by André Negrao (Cram Compétition), Hugo Valente and Giovanni Venturini (Epsilon Euskadi). Unlike the day before, weather conditions were good and the track completely dry when the twenty one cars competing in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 lined up on the start grid. Everyone had opted for slicks.

When the green light came on, poleman Arthur Pic was taken by surprise by André Negrao’s excellent start. The Brazilian took command of the race ahead of the Frenchman. Hugo Valente lay in third place, Kevin Korjus fourth and Miguel Otegui (Epsilon Euskadi) fifth, while a hapless Daniel De Jong (MP Motorsport) span his car in the first lap and found himself relegated towards the back of the field.

The four leaders quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. Arthur Pic and Kevin Korjus tried to shake things up a little. Pic attacked Negrao while Korjus attended to Valente. Arthur Pic tried to overtake under braking at the end of the long Motorland straight. Hemmed in by the Brazilian, the French driver had to put a wheel on the wet rumble strip, lost control of his car and hit André Negrao. The two boys were forced to retire and leave Hugo Valente and Kevin Korjus to fight it out for the win.

The Estonian mounted attack after attack, but Hugo Valente staved him off.. This dog-fighting between the two leaders allowed Miguel Otegui, Luciano Bacheta (Interwetten.com) and Alex Riberas (Epsilon Euskadi) to get back within striking distance, all four wheel to wheel. On the sixth lap, Kevin Korjus threatened to get past Hugo Valente with an impressive piece of driving. One lap later, Miguel Otegui made a mistake and dropped back to tenth place. This put Luciano Bacheta, still battling with Alex Riberas and Bart Hylkema, in third.

Up in front, the positions would remain the same now. So Kevin Korjus drove to his second win of the weekend and leaves Motorland Aragón on top of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 standings. Hugo Valente passed the chequered flag in second position to take his first podium finish in this discipline. The race for the third podium place went down to the wire. Bart Hylkema, having started back in eleventh place on the grid, overtook both Alex Riberas and Luciano Bacheta to finally land the third prize, underlining the form of the Koiranen Bros Motorsport team.

Quote, unquote:

Kevin Korjus: “Even though I won here in the rain yesterday, I wasn’t really expecting to do a double! It was clear from early in the race that we were quick. I made a mistake or two trying to get past Hugo Valente, and he defended his position very well. Now I’m the leader of the Eurocup FR 2.0. I believe in my chances for the races to come.”

Hugo Valente: “For this first race - after everything that’s happened to our team over the last few weeks - I wasn’t necessarily looking for a podium finish… This is the first podium both for myself and for Tech 1 Racing in the discipline. It’s great and it’s a reward for the enormous efforts we’ve all made over the last few days.”

Bart Hylkema: “Starting from eleventh position, difficult to go for a good result. Having said that, we knew we had a very effective car. I applied myself to avoiding errors and overtaking cleanly. It’s a super result for the team and very motivating for the rest of the season.”
