Formula Renault 2.0

Today, Sunday, the Group B drivers began qualifying for the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In the early part of the session Daniil Kvyat set the tempo with a lap in 1m 35.468s followed by Nyck de Vries and Alex Riberas. After setting his time Kvyat, winner of yesterday’s race, stayed out to hit back at his rivals if necessary. De Vries and Riberas fought for second place but were unable to pose a threat to the Russian. He ended the session on top while the Dutchman was second quickest in front of Stefan Wackerbauer, Ed Jones and Riberas.

After a few laps spent warming up his tyres Stoffel Vandoorne took the lead in Group A in 1m 36.354s. But he still had to do better than Kvyat to clinch pole. The Joseph Kauffman driver edged closer with a time of 1m 35.68às.

Norman Nato took the fight to the Belgian briefly, and finally with a lap in 1m 35.344s, Vandoorne set his fourth pole on the bounce in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. Into second and third came Nato and Oliver Rowland.

Stoffel Vandoorne: It wasn’t that easy to get pole. I made a few mistakes in the early laps and I didn’t get the best out of the car. Finally, I clinched it on my final attempt.”

Norman Nato: “We’ve done a good job since yesterday as we were way off the pace. I’m a bit miffed as I was held up by drivers who were on their slowing-down lap without paying attention to the others. We’ve not been very lucky in the past few races so I’d like to have a trouble-free run and score points!”
