Ideal weekend for Korjus
Showing lots of composure in the face of incessant attacks from Aaro Vainio (Tech 1 Racing), Kevin Korjus (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) drove to his second win, making it a perfect weekend with two pole positions and two victories. Coming into this round with a lead of eleven points in the overall standings, the Estonian driver leaves Germany a full twenty-one points ahead of Arthur Pic (Tech 1 Racing), third again today.
Just like the previous day, Kevin Korjus started from number one position on the front row, ahead of the Tech 1 Racing drivers Aaro Vainio and Arthur Pic. Clearly not falling victim to the mounting pressure, the Estonian immediately took control of the race ahead of Aaro Vainio, Arthur Pic and Luciano Bachet (Interwetten.com), who got the better of Javier Tarancon (Epsilon Euskadi). But the Spaniard fought back and moved up to reclaim fourth position before the end of the first lap. Back in the peloton, an error by Giovani Venturini (Epsilon Euskadi) saw him plough into the rail.
Kevin Korjus and Aaro Vainio pushed hard in the early laps to pull away from the Pic, Tarancon duo. Farther back, Bart Hylkema (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) showed us some inspired driving to overtake Andre Negrao (Cram Competition) and grab 9th place. A lap later, Hugo Valente (Tech 1 Racing) took his turn to get the better of the Brazilian to move into 10th.
Javier Tarancon, in just his second race in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, boldly overtook Arthur Pic in lap 5 to win third place. The French driver got his own back a few turns later and Javier Tarancon emerged from the duel with some damage to his front wing. At the same time there was a coming together between Genis Olivé and Alex Riberas, causing Riberas to fall right back in the rankings.
But this race was far from over, with Aaro Vainio looming large in Korjus’ rear views. Pic was still grappling with Javier Tarancon, while in battle for 5th place, Luciano Bacheta and Ludwig Ghidi (Keo Racing) kept swapping positions.
The drivers continued to push hard right down to the wire. Aaro Vainio stayed in contact until the end but despite several attacks, into the final lap, Kevin Korjus drove to the win for the sixth time this year and further stretches his overall lead in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. The first four were the same four as in race one. Aaro Vainio finished second, ahead of Arthur Pic and Javier Tarancon, impressive in his debut in the discipline.
Kevin Korjus: "I made one or two mistakes and my tyres suffered badly, so the last laps were very dicy. I was sliding a lot and it wasn’t easy holding Aaro off. This weekend turned out ideal for me, but the season isn’t over yet. Now we need to manage the situation and score points rather than going for wins at all costs".
