Formula Renault 3.5

Jean-Eric Vergne, runner-up in last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series, was at Motorland Aragon this weekend for the opening round of the 2012 World Series by Renault. He is now driving in F1 for the Toro Rosso team and he came to generate excitement on the track at the wheel of the Red Bull-Renault RB6 for the F1 Show. The former Fr 3.5 Series driver reckons that this year’s championship is more open than ever.

“At least ten drivers can win at each race,” Jean Eric said. “It’s difficult to pick out a favourite for the title at this stage of the season. I’ve already raced here and it’s difficult to establish any kind of hierarchy after this weekend. The field’s very good, very equal with good drivers from different backgrounds. The FR 3.5 Series is a high-level championship and the best school to learn about racing in F1, as I was lucky enough to find out. I’m a bit disappointed not to have had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the new FR 3.5 as it’s quicker and very competitive.”

While JEV just failed to clinch the title at the last meeting of the year he knows what it takes to win the 17-race championship: “You have to be very strong mentally because of the overall quality of your rivals. Of course, you have to be in front to avoid accidents and finish each race scoring the highest number of points possible. I know from experience that it’s far from easy.”
