Nurburgring

The World Series by Renault has four championships and around 120 cars take to the track so painstaking organisation is vital. It’s the same story for the tyres as Michelin supplies rubber to the whole field – around 2400 tyres per meeting. Here is a quick look at the French manufacturer’s meticulous logistics.

The Nürburgring meeting is one for the four of the season that brings together the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, the Eurocup Mégane Trophy and the Clio Cup. This requires a big logistics operation on the part of Michelin. Six transporters leave Clermont-Ferrand, the French tyre capital, to provide rubber for the teams entered: 700 tyres for the FR 3.5 Series and 1700 for the other three categories. Between the tyres allocated to the teams and the possibility of changeable weather conditions a large stock of tyres has to be available.

The tyres are supplied pre-inflated to the teams with instructions on how to use them; it is then up to the engineers of each squad to maximise their performance. The tyres begin a new life depending on the opinion of the teams on how to make the most of their optimal window: pressure, temperature buildup, camber, driving style are all factors that have to be taken into account to make the tyre quick, and enable it to transmit all the car’s power to the track.

In the meantime and during their use Michelin is in contact with the teams to ensure performance follow-up. The information feedback, when the teams play the game, helps the French company to fine-tune its performance model.

Michelin has been Renault’s partner for many years, and has supplied rubber to the teams entered in the World Series by Renault since its creation in 2005. The performance of the cars is the best proof of this fruitful partnership. In addition, Michelin enables spectators in the paddock to have the same experiences in its driving simulator as those of a Mégane Trophy driver– thrills guaranteed!
