Formula Renault 2.0

Group A was first out this morning on the Hungaroring in the FR 2.0 Eurocup. The Tech 1 Racing drivers were the first to set a target time as Felipe Fraga and Matthieu Vaxivière both got round in 1m 44.175s!

The times fell at the end of the session as Daniil Kvyat went for it and the Russian set the quickest lap in 1m 43.084s which, he thought, was good enough for first place in his group so he pitted before the end of the session. But on his final flyer Mikko Pakari created an upset by bagging provisional pole in 1m 42.942s.

The Group B drivers aim was to beat Pakari. Stoffel Vandoorne gradually got near the Finn’s time which he then beat with a lap in 1m 42.853s. He then improved to 1m 42.411s the fastest lap ever by an FR 2.0 on the Hungaroring. It was the Belgian’s fifth pole on the bounce!

Stoffel Vandoorne: “I made a mistake on my first attempt and then I had a clear track with no one in front of me and I set pole. It’s very important here all the more so as Daniil qualified further back. Ideally, I have to win this race.”

Mikko Pakari: “Lap after lap I felt the car getting better. I made a few mistakes, I slowed down for a lap and then I put in a flyer. It’s my first time on this circuit and I like it. It’s very important to qualify well here so I’m obviously pretty happy!”
