Eurocup Mégane Trophy

Fifth place in race two was all Mirko Bortolotti needed to secure the 2013 Eurocup Megane Trophy title. The Italian had done the hard part by claiming pole position, but bad weather on Sunday washed out his hopes of clinching the championship at Paul Ricard.

Mirko Bortolotti (Oregon Team) dominated qualifying once more and claimed his 11th pole of the season, and his eighth in a row. His team-mate, Kevin Gilardoni (Oregon Team), qualified alongside him on the front row. Erik Janis (Gravity Charouz), Max Braams (Las Moras by Equipe Verschuur) and Toni Forné (Gravity Charouz) completed the top five, with Mike Verschuur (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) only managing sixth.

A violent storm and poor weather conditions, however, meant the drivers’ safety could not be guaranteed. The Eurocup Megane Trophy’s race organisers and team managers therefore decided to cancel Sunday’s race.

To make up for today’s cancelled race, the organisers proposed staging a third race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the weekend of 19-20 October. This proposal was accepted by the teams. The starting grid for this third race will be based on the results of Sunday’s qualifying session at Paul Ricard.

As a result of today’s cancellation, the overall title fight between Mirko Bortolotti and Mike Verschuur, and Jeroen Schothorst’s (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) duel with Toni Forné for the Gentlemen Drivers’ crown, will be decided in Spain.

Eurocup Megane Trophy – provisional championship standings: 1. M. Bortolotti 235; 2. M. Verschuur 169; 3. K. Gilardoni 121; 4. K. Snoeks 117; 5. E. Janis 109 [...]
