De Jong hopeful

MP Motorsport’s Daniel de Jong put in an impressive performance in collective testing at Barcelona today when he set fastest time of the day in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Meanwhile, the newcomers to the class appeared at ease, as Korainen Bros Motorsport's Daniil Kvyat set the second fastest time on only his first day behind the wheel of a Formula Renault 2.0, while Tech 1 Racing’s Carlos Sainz Junior came in third. The top five was completed by Interwetten.com’s Luciano Bacheta and Tech 1 Racing’s Hugo Valente.

With the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Drivers title already decided, all eyes are on the Teams championship that will be played out between Tech 1 Racing and Korainen Bros Motorsport at Barcelona this weekend. Meanwhile, the 2011 season seems to be getting into full swing this weekend as the Red Bull Junior Team drivers, Carlos Sainz Junior and Daniil Kvyat, take part in the final. After a convincing debut at Silverstone, Sainz now joins the ranks at Tech 1 Racing, while Russian Daniil Kvyat got his first taste of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 today.

Krenek Motorsport’s Giulio Glorioso, Cram Competition’s Pedro Quesada, Kochanski Motorsport Project’s Jakub Smiechowski and Interwetten’s Christof Von Grüningen will also take part in their first meeting of the season.

The first of the two sessions of collective testing was punctuated by a number of red flags, in particular following incidents involving Korainen Bros Motorsport's Miki Weckström and Christof Von Grüningen. However, they did little to stop Carlos Sainz Junior from taking the session by the scruff of the neck. With his father looking on, Sainz set the best time of the morning with a lap of 1’46”579 to beat the 2010 champion, Korainen Bros Motorsport's Kevin Korjus. Daniil Kvyat, third, was also on the pace, With Tech 1 Racing’s Arthur Pic and Daniel de Jong completing the top-five for the morning session.

As soon as the second session got going, so did Daniel de Jong, beating Sainz’s performance ofrom earlier in the day with a lap time of 1’46”359. Shortly after, the session was interrupted when Christof Von Grüningen crashed out. When the session restarted, Tech 1 Racing's Hugo Valente eased into second place before Daniil Kvyat managed to sneak in between de Jong and Valente, before the session was interrupted again, this time by Pedro Quesada. Things would remain unchanged in the last part of the session. Daniil de Jong therefore finished the day with the fastest lap, to lead Daniil Kyvat and Carlos Sainz Junior.

Quote:

Carlos Sainz Jr: “This morning’s session went really well, but I tried we tried to make a few changes for the second session and the car was definitely less effective. Tomorrow we’ll go with Plan A. I’m here to learn and to prepare for next season. Driving in Spain hasn't put me under the slightest pressure. I’m not going out there to win, just to learn and to gain some experience.”
