Eurocup Mégane Trophy

Unbeaten in qualifying so far this season, Mirko Bortolotti (Oregon Team) went fastest once again at Spa-Francorchamps to claim pole for race one, though Kevin Gilardoni (Oregon Team) recorded the best of the second-fastest laps and will lead the field in Sunday’s race.

Following the morning’s lengthy fog delay the two scheduled 15-minute sessions were condensed into a single 20-minute run. After Erik Janis (Gravity Charouz) had made a fast start, Kevin Gilardoni moved out front before Mirko Bortolotti outpaced him by three hundredths of a second with seven minutes remaining.

Though the Italian could not improve on his time of 2:25.137, no one else could match it, leaving him at the front of the grid for Saturday’s race alongside team-mate Kevin Gilardoni, with Kelvin Snoeks (Oregon Team), Erik Janis (Gravity Charouz) and Mike Verschuur (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) behind them. Thanks to his fastest second lap Kevin Gilardoni will sit on pole for race two tomorrow, followed by Kelvin Snoeks, Erik Janis, Mirko Bortolotti and Mike Verschuur.

Speaking afterwards, Mirko Bortolotti said: “I’m thrilled to be on pole again. I was on course to improve on my fastest lap but made a mistake and that ruined it, which means we’ve got a perfect qualifying result for one race and not such a good result for the other. Even so, our pace is good and anything is still possible from the second row.”

Saturday’s Eurocup Megane Trophy race at Spa-Francorchamps gets under way at 17:00.
