Eurocup Clio

Stephan Polderman (Madeno Racing) followed his fastest time in collective testing at the Paul Ricard HTTT in September with another one in Friday’s session in Barcelona. The Belgian stole in just ahead of Marc Guillot (Milan Competition), who looked very much the part at the Catalunya track, while championship winner Nicolas Milan (Milan Competition) was also in the frame, despite changing his set-up.

Azor Duenas (Milan Competition) and John Wartique (Milan Competition) are among the new faces in this weekend’s Eurocup Clio line-up, as is Irishman Eoin Murray (Monolite Motorsport), who set the early pace in Friday morning’s testing before slipping back down the field. In the meantime, Mike Verschuur (Equipe Verschuur), Guillot and Robert Van den Berg (Harders Plaza Racing) upped the tempo.

A winner on this track in the Spanish Clio Cup a few weeks ago, Guillot picked up the pace after a few warm-up laps, leading the way from team-mate Duenas with a time of 2:08:129. The red flags then came out after Salvatore Arcarese (Rangoni Motorsport) went off.

The standings remained unchanged until the final seconds of the session, when Duenas went quickest with a time of 2:07:472, relegating Marc Guillot to second, with 2011 Eurocup Clio champion Milan completing a one-two-three for Milan Competition.

Verschuur tried to break the Milan Competition stranglehold as the afternoon’s testing began, with Philippe Maurin (Duprey Competition) doing his bit by setting the day’s fastest provisional time. Undaunted, Milan and his cohorts took control once more, the team leader regaining the lead before giving way to Guillot. Then, with the chequered flag out, Polderman took everyone by surprise with a flying lap of 2:05:654 to claim the honours for the day.

What they said:

Nicolas Milan: “I’ll be driving in next year’s Eurocup Megane Trophy, which means this is my last Eurocup Clio weekend. I want one last win before I sign off, though I’d also like to see Marc Guillot get a win because he’s very quick here. He won here at Barcelona in the Spanish Clio Cup a couple of weeks ago and he’s got a big part to play.”

Azor Duenas: “This is my first drive at European level and it’s my last race of the season. We swapped cars with Nicolas. He’s using the one I drove in the Spanish Clio Cup and I’m driving the one he used in the Eurocup Clio. I’m from Barcelona so I want to do well here. Coming first this morning and fourth this afternoon is just perfect, and I hope to be battling for victory all weekend.”
