Kevin Korjus closes in on the title

Kevin Korjus (Koiranen Bros Motorsport) has made a major step towards taking the title by taking his seventh victory this season in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. The Estonian did however have to battle hard to get the better of the Epsilon Euskadi drivers, Carlos Sainz Junior and Javier Tarancon. Had it not been for an inexperienced error, Carlos Sainz Junior could well have taken his first win in the category. In the end, he finished third behind Kevin Korjus and Javier Tarancon.

Kevin Korjus was clearly the man on form in qualifying here in Silverstone taking both pole positions of the weekend. Today, the Estonian lined up on the front row ahead of Carlos Sainz Junior, starting from second in only his first qualifying session in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Having crashed out in qualifying, Arthur Pic (Tech 1 Racing), second in the Drivers’ standings, started from back in 13th position on the grid. The Frenchman will now need nothing short of a miracle if he wants to keep his title chances alive.

Carlos Sainz Junior got off to an excellent start, slotting into first place ahead of Kevin Korjus and Luciano Bacheta (Interwetten). In front of his home crowd, Luciano Bacheta tried to find a way past himself, but the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 leader was not about to be taken by surprise again. At the end of lap one, it was Carlos Sainz Junior who held the lead ahead of Kevin Korjus, Luciano Bacheta, Javier Tarancon and Richard Singleton (Team Firstair).

The Epsilon Euskadi drivers are clearly on fine form. While Carlos Sainz Junior was busy setting a good pace out front, Javier Tarancon imposed his authority on the race by passing Luciano Bacheta. Bacheta then had to defend his position against Richard Singleton and Aaro Vainio (Tech 1 Racing). The Finn, looking decidedly determined to move up the order, found a way past Richard Singleton then started to attack Luciano Bacheta.

Sandwiched between Carlos Sainz Junior and Javier Tarancon, Kevin Korjus found himself caught between a desire to attack Sainz and the need to hold off Tarancon. Further back down the field, Arthur Pic was gradually moving up the order. Having started from 13th, the Frenchman was up to 10th with six laps gone and was closing up fast on those in front of him.

Then, with a solid lead, Carlos Sainz Junior went into a high-speed spin. Despite showing skills more usually expected of a rally driver to regain control of his car, the 16 year old still fell back to 3rd, behind Kevin Korjus, now 1st, and Javier Tarancon. Meanwhile, Arthur Pic was continuing to claw his way back, now up to 7th.

But that was the way things were to stay, with Kevin Korjus going on to take his seventh victory of the season. It will now be enough for the Estonian to score two points more than Arthur Pic tomorrow, in the second race of the weekend, to take the title. The other podium places went to the Epsilon Euskadi drivers, with Javier Tarancon ahead of Carlos Sainz Junior, who put in a convincing performance in only his first race at this level.
