Eurocup Mégane Trophy
Runaway points leader Mirko Bortolotti (Oregon Team 2) has been waiting to seal the deal in Eurocup Megane Trophy since Hungary. Wins for the tenacious Mike Verschuur (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) at the Hungaroring and in France kept the title race alive, however, with the subsequent postponement of race two at Paul Ricard preventing the Italian from wrapping the title up one round early.
That cancelled race has been added to the Barcelona card, and with 75 points up for grabs in Spain, the 2009 Eurocup Megane Trophy winner still has a chance to overhaul the Italian, who is fully 66 points clear. Though his hopes are slender, the Dutchman will be out to keep the suspense going and maintain his bids to become the first driver to win the discipline twice.
Having helped his team clinch the championship, Kevin Gilardoni (Oregon Team 2) is aiming to extend his run of three straight top-three finishes and snatch a first win of the campaign. Also without a victory so far, Kelvin Snoeks (Oregon Team 3) and Erik Janis (Gravity Charouz) have not given up hope of taking third place.
The dominant force in the 2011 Eurocup Megane Trophy season, Stefano Comini will make his reappearance with Team Lompech Sport. The winner of 11 races two years ago, the Swiss scored podium finishes in Russia and Hungary as a free agent in 2012 and it will come as no surprise to see him feature large this weekend.
The gentlemen drivers’ title will also be decided in Spain. Jeroen Schothorst (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) holds a seemingly impregnable 53-point lead, but will need to guard against complacency, especially with nearest challenger Toni Forne (Gravity Charouz) racing on home tarmac.
